Acne Treatment (Dermatologist)
Acne is generally characterized by whiteheads and blackheads, and cysts or lumps that can be found on the face, chest, back or nearly anywhere else on the body. Although acne usually begins with the onset of puberty, it is very common for it to persist through young adulthood and even into maturity.
There are many myths about the causes of acne, but in reality, they are numerous and multifactorial, and can differ with each individual. Skin type, genetics, stress, diet, and environmental irritants can all play a part in causing acne. Only an exam and discussion with your dermatologist can truly determine the causes of your acne and an effective treatment plan.
Whatever the cause, there is no need to live with acne. Regardless of age or skin type, we can formulate the right acne management treatment plan for any individual. Our patients are able to take advantage of the latest topical, systemic, and technological treatments, including light and laser therapies.
Most cases of mild to moderate acne can be treated with topical medications, such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and antibiotics. More severe cases can necessitate an oral antibiotic, or possibly a course of oral isotretinoin systemic treatment.
If prior acne has resulted in dark spots or scarring, we have solutions for that as well. Dark spots can often be treated with topical medication, and both dark spots and scarring can be reduced with microdermabrasion, chemical peels, cryopeels and skin resurfacing. These treatments can also be used regularly to improve overall skin health, which results in natural enhancement of the tone and texture of the skin.
We also offer blue light therapy. This option is extremely popular with many of our patients because it is fast (fifteen minutes),requires zero downtime, and aside from its effect on acne it often improves the general tone and texture of the skin. For truly resistant acne, we can also provide photodynamic therapy (Treatment).
